Otaku Expo 2013 Day 2 Moved to Another Date Due to Robbery at SM Megamall


Due to robbery incident happened last Saturday evening, Otakuzine Anime Magazine announced early this morning that today’s Otaku Expo 2013 is cancelled and will be moved to a later date.

Exhibitors were also advised to start their engress at 12PM today.

The robbery happened at 7:40PM in a jewelry store located at ground floor of the SM Megamall Bldg B.

Several shots were heard causing panic to mall goers while several stores went on  lock-down.

Twitter account of SM Supermalls tweeted that there were no casualties. This was also confirmed by Mandaluyong City Mayor Benjur Abalos.

Robbers used a pipe wrench, alledgedly bought before the incident, to break the glass casing and walked away with uncertain amount of jewelries.

Unconfirmed reports said that robbers were wearing costumes but EPD District Director Chief Supt. Miguel Laurel clarified that suspects were wearing ordinary clothes and jeans.

SM Megamall went back to normal operations few hours after the incident.

SM Supermalls in an official statement assured the safety of the public after the incident.

SM Management deeply regrets the robbery incident at a jewelry counter inside the SM Department Store of SM Megamall at 7:26pm on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Initial reports indicate that the group responsible is the “Martilyo Gang”. They pounded the jewelry fixtures, broke the glass and stole an undetermined amount of jewelry before escaping. A gunshot was reportedly fired at the ceiling but no one was hurt. We would like to assure the public that the management has further beefed up security. We apologize for the scare that the incident may have caused.
