December 2012 Event Recap


December is a month for the kids and also a month of never-ending events.

People rushing to malls to buy present for their godchildren, children and their love ones.Not to mention, different toys and kids-related events have been sprouting almost every week. Fortunately, yours truly attended some of these events namely, SwordplayAnimax Carnival Philippines, 7th Christmas Toy Fair and the Ozinefest: Anime Figure Special.

This is a recap of the events happened last December.


SWORDPLAY: A Rurouni Kenshin Cosplay Competition
December 2, 2012

The University of the Philippines – Anime Manga Enthusiasts (UP-AME), Movie Punch and SM Cinema hosted the Swordplay – A Rurouni Kenshin Cosplay Competition last December 2, 2012,

The Swordplay Cosplay Competition was held to promote the release of the most anticipated Japanese film Rurouni Kenshin  in the Philippines. The venue was originally set at the SM North EDSA Annex but due to schedule conflict with a K-Pop event , the event was moved to a smaller venue, at 3rd Floor still at the SM North EDSA.

One of the highlights of the event was the Swordplay cosplay competition that started later in the afternoon. It was divided into Rurouni Kenshin category for those cosplaying as Rurouni Kenshin characters and Open Category for non-Rurouni Kenshin cosplays. Cosplayer Jin Joson, known for her detailed cosplay of Kenshin Himura was one of the guest judge of the cosplay competition.

Robinson Place Manila Atrium

Anime fans trooped to Robinson Place Manila in Ermita last December 9 to participate in the recent Animax Carnival Philippines. This is the third Animax Carnival organized by Asia’s first anime channel, Animax after successful events in Malaysia and Taiwan and also the third Animax event in the Philippines since 2004.

One of the highlight of the event was the Grand Finals of the ANIMAX Ani-mate search where 7 girls were given a chance to become the newest Ani-mate along side with Philippines’ cosplay queen, Alodia Gosiengfiao. Nineteen-year-old, Rhianna Floresca who is cosplaying Hikaru Shindou from the classic anime Magic Knight Rayearth took home the crown.

Alodia also showcased her latest cosplay costume, “Neko” from Animax’ latest anime series “K”. Animax also announced their upcoming latest anime acquisitions for 2013, namely Hyouka, Shakugan No Shana III, Chihayafuru, Accel World and many more.

Cosplayers Krizdel Ingresso, Maria Victoria Meneses and Erika Jean Garbin were announced winners in a cosplay competition held in the event.

7TH CHRISTMAS TOY FAIR with the 2nd Philippine Die cast and Custom Car Show

SM Megatrade Hall 1

Now on its 7th year, Collectible Unlimited, in cooperation with the Megatrade Halls brought you the 7th Christmas Toy Fair, side by side with the 2nd Philippine Die Cast & Custom Car Show

SM’s Megatrade Hall 1 was filled with various merchandise booths that sells anything from large toys, small figurines, accessories, T-shirts, and many more. Die-cast exhibits was also setup at one corner of the hall.

There was no cosplay competition, but a cosplay parade that was held on the third day of the toy fair. In the span of 3 days, cosplayers did not hinder to showcase their costumes even if  the event was more focused on toys.

One of the highlight of the fair was the toy donation drive for the benefit of the Philippine Toy Library that aims to transform idle spaces  into fun and educational playrooms to keep off our kids from the streets.

Local cosplay group, JusticePH composed of Western superheroes Flash, Batman, Wonder woman, Superman, Aquaman and Green Lantern, were there to gaze the event. The group also introduced some of their new members.

The peaceful event was disrupted with reports of lost bags and items. It became the cause of  a confrontation incident between a cosplayer and one of the event staff.

December 28 & 29, 2012
SM Megatrade Hall 3

Before parting the year 2012, staff of Otakuzine Anime Magazine held its year-ender anime event, the Ozine Fest: Anime Figure Special last December 28 & 29 in the smallest hall of SM Megatrade.

Supposedly an event to showcase toys and anime figures, the event featured activities similar to the larger Ozinefest held in summer. Team Onii-chan, one of the Ozinefest’s partners, provided mostly the anime figures on display in the event.

There were the usual battle of the bands, karaoke contest, the ever popular trivia games,  toy auction and cosplay competition. Rhianna Floresca in her first appearance  in an event after the winning the ANIMAX Ani-mate Search, was the guest judge of the cosplay competition.
