The Best of Anime 2013, A Recap (Day 1)

Despite the uncooperative weather last weekend, thousands of anime fans and cosplayers trooped to SM Mall Asia to take part in one of the star-studded anime events in the country, the Best of Anime 2013.

This is the fourth Best of Anime event organized by Primetrade Asia, Inc. which was held last September 14 and 15 at Function Rooms 3 and 4, SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City.

The first day started with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Primetrade Asia Inc. President Irene Lloren with international guest Joe Inoue and J-pop idol group Starmarie. Award-winning ‘crossplayer’ Karael, WCS Thailand 2011 representatives Yuki Godbless and Jiaki Darkness and Anime ambassador Doraemon with Nobita also joined the opening ceremonies.

HEROtv host Myrtle Sarrosa, cosplay queen Alodia Gosiengfiao with her sister Ashley and Korean model Jinri Park who made a short appearance on stage, joined later in the afternoon.

The day went on smoothly as scheduled with a lot of workshops made short but ‘meaty’ information about their respective topics.

Some of the workshop that gave me attention was the Karate Demo from Kyokushin-kan Philippines which broke wood planks and a baseball bat live on stage, the blogging workshop of renowned Japan culture blogger Rochelle Dumlao and the ‘entertaining’ voice acting workshop from Filipino voice actors and actress of HEROtv.

The meet and greet of ‘crossplayer’ Karael, Doraemon and Nobita and the Gosiengfiao sisters was scheduled on the first day. Karael who was cosplaying Kazuto Kirigaya from Sword Art Online, ‘comfortably’ entertained the fans both on and off the stage.

Upcoming music artist, Ashley Gosiengfiao performed live on stage with her acoustic cover of Paramore’s Still into You while Alodia dressed as Danny Choo’s mascot Mirai Suenaga introduced her new song ‘Kawaii Girl’ to the audience.

We also had a glimpse of YukiGodbless cosplaying as Tohka Yatogami  from sci-fi romance ‘Date A Live’ while JiakiDarkness is dressed as Shin from PSP game Tokino Kizuna. There were also live performances from local Jrock bands Asian Chicken Fest and Stigma of Disgrace.

Jinri Park on the other hand made a short trip in the event where she also announced first hand that she is leaving the Philippines to undergo training in acting and hosting in South Korea.

Japanese artist Joe Inoue also showed up as a judge for the Quick Draw Competition and the Battle of the Bands. He performed on second day.

Another highlight of the event was the All-Star Cosplay Competition to be judged by the international cosplayers from Thailand (Yuki, Jiaki and Karael), local guest cosplayers – Alodia, Ashley and Myrtle Sarrosa in her Yoshino (Date a Live) cosplay and blogger Rochelle Dumlao of

Forty-eight cosplayers participated in the competition with chibi cosplayers Ashley Misaki and Izaiah Buelos winning the chibi and mecha category, respectively. The two cosplayers, both cosplaying Gundam robots wowed the audience with their detailed costumes and superb performance.

Alexia Sheridan playing as three Yunas from game Final Fantasy bagged the competition’s cloth category while a group cosplaying as characters from AKB0048 won the group category.

Below were some participants of the competition.

The day ended with fans screaming and shouting in the tune of the energetic performance from idol group Starmarie. They performed 7 to 8 songs from their albums which can be mistakenly identified as an opening and ending songs of an anime series. This is the group’s second performance overseas after Anime Expo 2013 in the U.S.
