Naruto Cosplayers Philippines, in cooperation with Red Cloud Events held its Pinoy Otaku Encore event on February 22 at Starland Themepark and Resort in Alabang, Muntinlupa.

Naruto Cosplayers Philippines has invited animeph project to be one of its  official media partners and we went to Alabang to cover the event last Saturday.

The Starland Themepark and Garden Resort is located at the top floor of Starmall Alabang. I described the venue as a mini fantasy land with some rides and a big castle. Outside the themepark, Starland is also a garden resort. People can enjoy the rides and swim at the pools with minimal fees.

The attendees had a lot of fun shooting photos while using the venue as their background. We were informed by one of the founding members of NCPH David D’Angelo during their next event, the Pinoy Otaku Festval (POF): Fantasm that the whole venue will be turned into ‘Britannia’ from the series Code Geass for the Live-Action Role Playing (LARP) game.

The event started at around 2pm with the elimination round of Asian Music Festival Karaoke. More 10 contestants participated in the contest with the winners will be going to POF for the finals on May 22.

The Cosplay Idol 2 cosplay competition started at 4 pm with 28 cosplayers went on stage fir the catwalk. Participants vying for the Codplay Idol title showed their talents such as singing, dancing and; there were even arnis demonstration and acrobatic stunts aside from their usual cosplay catwalk.

Cross-dresser Ian Quito bagged the title with his comedic antics and ‘seductive’ catwalk as Fujiko Mine of anime series Lupin the Third. He will be advancing to the Finals on May 24 along with the other Cosplay Idol winners.

Here are the other winners of the competition.

  • Best Child: Natalia Chanelle Calilung as Sasha Braus from SNK
  • Best Female: Stephanie May Fausto as Yuruichi Shihoin from Bleach
  • Best Male: Megumi Otaku Goddess as Inori Yuzurika (Crossdress) from Guilty Crown
  • Best Mecha/Armor: Carl Lucas as Gosei Knight from Goseiger
  • Best Dragon Nest: Ianah Otaku as Academic

Sir David made some clarification during the announcement of the Best Male winner. Icee Ticar was supposed to be awarded the Best Male title, however, he had already won in the previous leg.  According to the rules, winners of previous leg can no longer win for any category, except for Cosplay Idol and sponsored category.

Another highlight of the event were live dance performances from Jpop dance cosgroups V’s Project and Raindrop. The nominations for the 2014 Otaku Choice Awards were also opened during the event. animeph project was a nominee last year.

There have been a lot of miscues happened during the program but ‘veteran host’ Faith Jongco was there to fill it up. No wonder that Ms Jongco was the winner last year’s Otaku Choice Award’s Best Event Host. She already hosted many otaku event beforehand, including some big ones like Cosplay Mania and likes. After the Ani-mate stint, Maronne Cruz is again back on stage and this time to host the cosplay competition along with NCPH’s Eleazar Santos.

Alabang was a bit far from my homebase and yet the long trip paid off. The setting is perfect even though the venue was not properly utilized. I was hoping that they’d used the whole venue  for Pinoy Otaku Encore but I guess it will be reserved on the main event this May.

In the end, Naruto Cosplayers Philippines pulled off a successful event again. Their next event will be the Pinoy Otaku Festival: Fantasm on May 24, still at  Starland Themepark and Garden Resort in Starmall Alabang. Hope to see you there.
