TOYCON 2014 Day 3: WCS Philippine Finals and the ‘Big Reveal’

Asia’s longest and running convention for toys and hobbies concludes by setting record attendance at Day 3 of the 13th Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Conventions 2014 at Megatrade Hall 1, 2 and 3 at SM Megamall.

As the day started, there is already a long line at the ticket booth. Cosplayers are going in and out of restrooms to dress up and apply their make-up on. Photographers are finding good spots for shoots, and lastly marshals of the event are going around the venue for a round check.

We were of course overwhelmed with the amazing number of exhibitors and retailers who had their merchandise already on display.  Collectors and enthusiasts will surely be pleased with the  number of toys and other collectibles on display and for sale.

The organizers weren’t kidding when they said that TOYCON would have the biggest exhibitor floor of all pop culture merchandise in terms of apparel, collectibles and memorabilia, graphic novels and comics, cosplay paraphernalia, and toys.  One would feel that he is in heaven while browsing through the many rare, unique and amazing merchandise on display or for sale at the best prices around.  Also to amaze about are the great gaming companies featuring their hit and up-and-coming games.

Highlights of the festivities included the World Cosplay Summit Philippines, hosted by  the world’s most adored cosplayer, Ms. Alodia Gosiengfiao.  Five teams from Manila and Davao, winning the right to compete by qualifying at their respective legs of the tournament, performed on stage in front of an awestruck crowd with their marvelously crafted armor and weapons.

All of them did their best to be champion, in the end, a team from Davao, Sora No Katsuo, composed of Matsu Bernales and Angeleah Mejo, was named  the champion, earning the right to be the second team to officially represent the country to the World Cosplay Summit to be held in Nagoya, Japan later this year.

Special guests were invited to play during the whole event, it was a wonderful experience that Midnight Meetings played for the folks at the event. With such beautiful music they played, some sing along. After the performance, Ashley Gosiengfiao went to her sister’s booth and participated in the meet and greet session for her fans are delighted to see her in presence.

TOYCON 2014 ended with an announcement that the organizers are inclined to move the event from SM Megatrade Hall. There have been no confirmation that it is SMX Convention Center but there have been hints that they will move the event there.

We will just wait for the official announcement at that.

TOYCON 2014 was easily a hit, setting record attendance.  It was a rather organized and orderly event thanks to the people behind the scenes such as the folks from Anime Alliance, and even though there were lots of attendees, it was peaceful for the most part.  But we all need to be careful during the event because belongings might get lost. Do ask cosplayers if it’s alright to take a photo of them and don’t be hasty for they can’t say no to the people around.
