(DISCLAIMER: May contains spoilers) Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) had a special screening last Monday, July 21, 2014, at the Director’s Club, SM Megamall (near SM Skating Rink at the 5th floor).
animeph project had a privileged to watch the live-action Black Butler movie first hand on the big screen last Monday. The movie opened to the public screening last July 23 exclusively in SM Cinemas nationwide.
The live-action Black Butler movie was co-directed by Kentaro Otani (also the director of Nana movie 1 & 2) and animation character designer Keiichi Sato (Tiger and Bunny), written by Tsutomu Kuroiwa from Yana Toboso’s original manga; produced by Shinzo Matsuhashi and Terukuni Ajisaka as cinematographer.
The movie runs for 119 mins in total. With such speculation, everyone is trying to find out who portrayed Ciel Phantomhive and Sebastian Michealis.
As the movie start, a brief explanation was told regarding the England that there is the East and West England, and the matter about the “Watchdogs”. We all know that they are under the Queen’s orders, they will solve mysterious cases lurking England.
The movie progress with a feeling that you are indeed watching the anime, for the opening song (Through the Ages” by Gabrielle Aplin) is connected to the feel of the movie. As an avid fan of the manga, the start of the movie was like a scene where in Ciel is in a warehouse was figuring out a case, in a wig and white long dress, he is being interrogated with a Mafia dealer, asking questions.
A few minutes in the movie, Sebastian shows up like a knight in shining armor, walking slowly while his shoes ticks on the concrete, and said the everly famous line of his: “I’m here to pick up my master..”. A wonderful way of making an entrance as always Sebastian.
If you watch the anime, there would be a part where in you’ll laugh because the every morning routine is played in one scene.
DIFFERENCE FROM THE ORIGINAL
Here is a twist in the movie: after the scene at the warehouse, we all know that Ciel is in a wig, but what we dont know is that Ciel is a girl in the movie named Shiori Genpo/Kiyoharu Genpo played by Ayame Gouriki.
Set in the year 2020, Shiori Genpo (Ayame Gouriki) runs the large corporation Funtom. Shiori is also a descendant of prestigious noble family Phantomhive of England. Now the head of Genpo family is now a mistress, Kiyoharu, dressing in boyish costumes with a similiar demeanor, hiding her female side since the death of her parents 10 years ago.
This time, the Genpo is ordered by the queen to solve a series of mummified incidents regarding foreign dignitaries within the nation. Their only clue is a mysterious Tarot card along side the victims.
As same in the manga and anime, once revenge is taken, Sebastian (Hiro Mizushima) will consume her soul.
I’ve notice later on the movie that this story wasn’t in the manga nor anime. I did a little research, and that this was a side story made by the writer.
The house of the Genpo Family was like the mansion in the manga and anime. Large front gates, long hall going to the main door, and a lovely flower garden at the back of the mansion. Cats are lurking in the area, we all know that Sebastian loves cats wherein he could just watch the cat drink milk all day without noticing the time.
The movie also featured the two caretakers, Tanaka played by Taro Shigaki and Maid Lyn (Mey Rin) played Mizuki Yamamoto. Finnian and Bardroy aren’t present for I was expecting they are at the mansion.
Kiyoharu and Sebastian continued to search about the ‘mummified’ incident and connect all the information they have gathered so far.
They went and investigated the mummified politician, requesting to meet at a back alley of a carnival, a car was park infront when they arrived, seeing the person coming out of the car, you’ll think that it’s Undertaker (played by fashion model Louis Kurihara) immediately because of the set up.
After getting to a new lead, they have ask help from her only relative, her Aunt, Hanae Wakatsuki (Yuka). With the help of her aunt, the story went into a fast pace, discovering an underground club for politicians, ambassadors, mafia, and so on.
Will they find out who’s really behind the serial mummification deaths? Will Kiyoharu finally find out who killed his parents?
IN THE END
As the movie progress on, it gets better and better – a fight scene, an exorcism, and the so called “devil’s fruit”.
There are scenes in the movie which were shown in the anime series and manga.
I may be an avid fan of the series, but I can say that the movie has no connection to them. It has its own story for you to wonder why Sebastian became like that in the end, and why are girls head-over-heels of Sebastian.
You will enjoy the movie without the need to read nor watch both the manga and the anime adaptation. I recommend to watch the movie for it is interesting and worth your time.
