Best of Anime 2014 – Event Recap

Primetrade Asia, Inc. has once again ended a successful Best of Anime last September 20-21 in Function Rooms 3 and 4 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia complex in Pasay.

The annual anime event shared the same schedule with Manila International Book Fair which opened a week earlier and Digitech event in Function Room 1.

A day before the event, Metro Manila and nearby provinces have been battered with monsoon rains brought by typhoon Mario.

There were calls from the social media to postpone the event to ensure safety of the attendees but despite all the calls, the organizers decided to continue the event.

The first day, as expected, had lower attendance compared to last year’s BoA event but as the hours went by, the crowd leveled as the typhoon moved away and the sun shone over the metro. We had an improved attendance in the second day but not as many in the previous BoA.

The program was smooth and without problems as it was hosted HEROtv’s Mikoy Morales and Christine Blardony. They also hosted the Hero Face Off 2014 in the second day of the Best of Anime 2014.

First day main highlights were the performances from the local and international guests. We had the J-idol group Starmarie performing with their three new members,

Thailand cosplayer Karael ramped as Kirito (Gun Gale Online version) from Sword Art Online, Singaporean blogger Kaika sang on her performance while Taiwanese cosplayer Onnies had a cute dance number as Kotori from Love Live School Idol Project.

We also had local cosplayer and internet sensation Liui Aquino in his infamous Hiccup cosplay doing a Disney skit with fellow cosplayers. He had meet and greet with the fans on the stage afterwards.

Various competition were held in day one of the Best of Anime 2014 and one of the highlight of this year’s event is the return of the BoA Superstars, Primetrade’s version of the Karaoke contest.

There was also the Quickdraw competition where participants must create a mascot for Marvy Uchida coloring brand in 20 minutes.

The Interschool Cosplay competition was also a success with Sergio Sta Ana cosplaying as Sasuri of Naruto Shippuden from Bulacan State University’s Anime Cosplay Empire declared the Champion of the contest.

Twenty-eight cosplayers participated in the event’s main cosplay contest, the BoA All-star Cosplay competition. Ashley Misaki and Izaiah Luke Buelos winning again the cosplay competition in the Chibi and Mecha Category, respectively. They also won last year’s BoA cosplay competition.

Bianca Mako as Mami from Madoka Magica won the cloth category.

First day of the Best of Anime 2014 ended with a performance from Japanese rock band .heidi. After .heidi’s ” rocking” performance, Japanese American artist Joe Inoue surprised the audience with a little  preview on what to expect of his performance on day 2.

The second day of Best of Anime 2014 featured the HEROtv’s prime cosplay event, Hero Face Off 2014.

After the HEROtv Dub It Out! Voice Acting Workshop which led by Filipino dubbers Jefferson Utanes and Filipina Pamintuan, we got another encore performance from Starmarie early in the morning.

The HeroFace Off 2014 started off with the participants from Kids Squad Category. It was immediately followed by the skit performance of 7 cosplay groups for the League of Heroes category. Unlike last year, more groups joined this year.

The winner of the Kid Squad category were Bolen Lareza (Champion) and Ashley Mizaki (Runner-Up)  while Team Crossback led by Andrew Arca and SGR48 led by Katrina Rodriguez topped the League of Heroes category.

Aside from Japanese bands and international cosplayer, the Best of Anime also invited through HEROtv, Filipino rock bands Pedicab and Sandwich. They performed during the HeroFace Off 2014 with their famous songs.

We had an great laugh with Joe Inoue as he sings some of his songs like Closer and the Oppai song. The Best of Anime 2014 ended with another long and great performance from heidi which both totally rocked SMX Function Halls 3 and 4.
