AsiaPOP Comicon Manila is Back!

AsiaPOP Comicon Manila is Back with Wider Unique Content, First Announcement of Hollywood Headliner to Start Next Week

Get ready for another round of pop culture epicness as AsiaPOP Comicon Manila is back—bigger and better, geekier than ever!

Impressed by the sheer amount of fan response and to the country’s infectious enthusiasm for pop culture, Universal Events & Entertainment—a subsidiary of the Al Ahli Holding Group—is staging the second installment of AsiaPOP Comicon Manila (APCC Manila) on August 26 to 28 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

The event has expanded from being more than a comic con as it will incorporate more elements of pop culture by integrating the existing comic con format with pop culture lifestyle trends, where beauty makeup artists, fashion influencers, unique children play zone, sporting section, digital and social media activation will tap into various segments of consumers to make it one great experience under the same roof.

“The energy of fans from the Philippines and in Asia is nothing like we’ve seen before. It’s these sorts of things that excite us to bring the best pop culture experiences in the world to this colorful country, This year we shall be bringing unique content where we can go beyond the usual movies, music, animation, gaming, toys and cosplay and offer fun elements within beauty, fashion, sports, lifestyle, digital activation and F&B; making it truly a pop culture carnival not witnessed before in the country” said Abdulla Mahmood, Director – Marketing and Business Development of Al Ahli Holding Group.

During its first run last year, APCC Manila featured a powerhouse Hollywood guest lineup that included Avengers star Paul Bettany, Game of Thrones actress Nathalie Emmanuel, Arrow heartthrob Colton Haynes, and Adventure Time voiceover genius Jeremy Shada, along with a roster of internationally-acclaimed cosplayers and artists.

For three days, visitors from all over the world dropped by to see the latest and greatest offerings in pop culture: exclusive merchandise, memorabilia exhibitions, even a life-sized Hulkbuster armor and an exclusive never before seen footage from Captain America: Civil War.

Pop Explosion

The second year of AsiaPOP Comicon Manila promises to boast another stellar set of celebrity guests and artists this 2016. First announcement of Hollywood headliner will happen on June 15, 2016.

With revelations on the way to this epic roster, APCC Manila 2016 also revealed its initial lineup of Cosplay Authority Global Challenge (The CAGE) cosplayers: including Ani Mia, Lindze Merritt, Riddle, and Yugana Senshi Uon. They are joined by artist Simone Legno of tokidoki, who is all set to bring the brand’s crazy-kawaii cool style to the event.

Legno is the world-famous artist and graphic illustrator best known for being one of the brains behind art giant tokidoki, through which he has collaborated with names such as Karl Lagerfeld, LeSportsac, Onitsuka Tiger, Marvel, and Hello Kitty, among others.

For the cosplayers, Mia currently writes for Otaku USA magazine, covering topics relevant to the cosplay hobby, in addition to travelling all over the world to judge costume contests and appear in different media. Merritt, for her part, combines her degrees in fashion, business, and aesthetics with her hobby. She has been featured in numerous magazines through the years.

A reality TV star, Riki LeCotey, aka Riddle, was one of the most popular characters in reality TV series Heroes of Cosplay, as well as the creator of Cosplay for a Cause, a charity outfit; while Yugana Senshi Uon is one of the newest rising stars in the cosplay scene, having started just a few years ago. Despite this, she has gained recognition all over Southeast Asia for her creative costume renditions, appearing in magazines and conventions.

Cosplay Competition

For the second time too, APCC Manila is proud to partner with The CAGE, the world’s biggest and first-of-its-kind cosplay competition. It aims to promote the spirit and craftsmanship of cosplay through costume and prop-making workshops, as well as provide a platform for cosplay enthusiasts and fans to compete on an international level.

It is currently inviting the best cosplay talents around the region to join the competition. The grand champion of the Open category will be determined by an impressive panel of expert judges from various areas of cosplay and will receive a record-breaking payout of up to USD$10,000. The CAGE also has a Kids category to cater to the younger audience.

“We were off to a good start last year with AsiaPOP Comicon and The CAGE competition. Now that we’ve seen just how hungry the Philippines and the entire region is for pop culture, we’re going to come back, even bigger and grander this time around. Watch out for more surprises,” Abdulla Mahmood added.

Meet and Greet Madness with South Korean cosplayer TUNA

After her first appearance in the Ozine fest last April, TUNA was able to meet her fans again at the Meet and Greet Madness session held last July 18 at Meeting Room 1, SMX Convention Center, SM Aura Premier.

The event consisted of two sessions, 1PM and 4PM and animephproject covered the earlier session. Among the merchandise available were some of her photos cosplaying as characters of various series. Her photo books were also available during the event.

The meet and greet session started with TUNA appeared onstage cosplaying Ranko Kanzaki of Idol M@ster Cinderella Girls, and the question and answer session followed.

Questions like:

  • What make up line do you use/recommend?

I don’t like using bold makeup. Any make up brand is fine. But I usually use Korean brand make ups like those from Etude House, Face Shop and Misha.

  • You have just released your first photobook. What are your tips for other cosplayers who are interested in doing a photoshoot?

Have a good communication with your photographers. It is best if you share opinions on the products and/or cosplay related stuff.

  • Where do you usually do your photoshoot?

I talk with my photographer about the location. It usually depends on what character I am going to cosplay. We discuss about the location together. The most important thing is that the place matches the character and/or costume.

The meet and greet ended with some fans took shots of the pretty cosplayer.

Another Meet and Greet Madness event is set this September 5 at SMX Convention Center Taguig.

You can check more photos from the event here.

Japanese cosplayer Reika no longer coming to Cosplay Mania ’15

In her Facebook profile, Japanese cosplayer Reika has announced that she is no longer coming as a guest cosplayer for Cosplay Mania ’15 this coming October.

An English translation was posted by one of her commenters which she acknowledged.

My most sincere apologies for deciding not to participate in the event, even though it had already been announced on the guest list.

However, I had made this decision because there were a lot of personal things that I needed to sort out.

“Am I going to participate in a situation like this?” “Am I simply being used as a means of promoting the event?” These are the sort of things I had been feeling since last year.

Since this year started, the staff had been communicating with me mostly in English. Until last year they were contacting me in Japanese, and I had the chance to discuss various things with them.

But now with the language barrier I felt like things were not going the way I had hoped, and I felt I was no longer able to build a good relationship with the staff. It’s very unfortunate to say this, but as such I have decided to not participate this year.

This is solely my own decision, and the I want everyone to know that the organizers of the event were not at fault.

Thank you for your understanding. I can only express my feelings appropriately in Japanese, so I wrote this message in Japanese.”, the organizers of Cosplay Mania ’15 has issued a statement today.

Earlier this month, we announced our first lineup of Guests for Cosplay Mania ’15 including Reika. Like all our confirmed guests, we made every effort to accommodate Reika’s requests, unfortunately she decided that, for personal reasons, she would not be able to attend Cosplay Mania this year. We would like to assure everyone that Kaname, Hana, Baozi and Ladybeard will still be going to Cosplay Mania this year and that we will also announce more guests in the near future.

The Cosplay Mania staff makes every effort to ensure that the guests are treated well and enjoy their stay in our event in order to create a fun and vibrant atmosphere for everyone. We look forward to another amazing event on October 3-4, 2015 at the SMX Convention Center Manila in Pasay City so please check our official event news and announcements for more updates.

Kaname, Hana, Baozi and Ladybeard are also guest cosplayers of Cosplay Mania ’15.

It was nostalgic how the three-member “fantasy unit” which started seven years ago, transformed into idol unit with five members, having a Asian concert tour and performing an ending song of a famous anime series Cardfight!! Vanguard G.

TOYCONPH 2015 Grand Launch Event Recap

Toy collectors and pop culture fans gathered last May 30 at the Newport Mall, Resorts World Manila to witness the kick-off event for ToyCon 2015.

The “Grand Launch” offered the audience a glimpse of the country’s biggest pop-culture event, the Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectible Convention, which will happen on June 19, 20 and 21 at Megatrade Halls, SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City.

Members of the Justice Ph discussed about the latest updates on the DC and Marvel universe. The panel discussion started with the TV series of The Flash and Arrow which is currently airing at The CW TV Network.  Upcoming movies like Batman VS Superman and the AntMan, as well as the soon-to-be-released merchandise and comic books were also revealed.

Reimaru Files were also on stage about the latest trends in gaming.

Event organizers from the Asian Comics, Toys, and Hobbies Collective, Inc. together with the representatives from iflix, Resorts World Manila, and Pacific Licensing announced the highlights of this year’s Toycon.

toycon-grand-launch (19)

One of the major issues raised from the previous Toycon events was the security and crowd management. According to the organizers, they are still finalizing their plans for the security together with the management of Megatrade Hall.  Another common concern was that of cosplayers crowding the common areas to change into and out of their costumes. A satellite venue and a dedicated washroom is planned to be set up during the event but no details were revealed yet.

It was announced last year that the venue for this year’s Toycon will be at the SMX MOA. The panel explained that while this was the original plan, there were two major events that were already booked for the month prior to their request.  The organizers decided to retain the venue in Megatrade Hall as they are comfortable holding the event there.  However, they will try again to push through with SMX next year.

Joining the panel is iflix, Southeast Asia’s leading Internet TV service which offers subscibers unlimited access to movies and TV series for a low monthly price. iflix hosts a number of American and South Korean TV series and movies and they are currently undergoing negotiations to acquire Japanese series and anime into their lineup.

The controversial “Party Night” will be replaced with the more child friendly “Quiz Night” for comics and toy geeks alike. Authority Hoodie will also host a fashion show featuring their DC licensed hoodies. Each entrance will have a unique decoration courtesy of DC, Marvel, iflix and Pacific Licensing.

Possible special guests would be the cast of Doraemon and 3 minions from the movie Despicable Me.

Iflix will also be giving away prizes to the winners of their FanFlick contest and Cosplay competition.

The event also hosted this year’s NCR Qualifiers of the World Cosplay Summit Philippines 2015. Only 3 groups participated in the competition with two advancing and will be competing against other teams from other regions in the Finals to be held at the HERO Face Off 2015.

HERO Face Off 2015 is set on June 6 at the Music Hall, SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. The winner of the Finals will be given prizes and represent the Philippines to the World Cosplay Summit Championships in Nagoya, Japan.

These and more will be available at their respective booths during the main event.
